By IGN StaffTo begin with, a simple explanation. is a PlayStation 2 game, the sequel to Tales of Destiny for the PlayStation. The PlayStation game you may have purchased in the United States was entitled Tales of Eternia in Japan, and was not a sequel to anything in storyline terms, although it was part of the Tales series, which share similar gameplay and presentation elements. We would like to thank Namco Hometek, or more likely the bollixed lines of communication between Namco Japan and Namco Hometek, for creating an issue that we will probably have to explain a few dozen times in the mailbag before everybody gets it. Now, moving onward.
Tales of Destiny 2, then, is the first true sequel in its Tales series of 2D action-RPGs. Or, to use Namco's particular nomenclature, this one is a Name of Fate RPG (or nonsense in Japanese to that general effect), although so far as we can tell, the series' traditional presentation has not changed substantially. 2D graphics are still in full effect for the characters, dungeons, and battle sequences, despite the transition to PlayStation 2, and artist Mutsumi Inomata is still handling the character designs.
Kyle Dunamis
We have ourselves a generational saga here. Though we're not sure where he got the last name, the 15-year-old Kyle is the son of Stahn Aileron and Rutee Katrea, respectively hero and heroine of Tales of Destiny. The hair's from his father, although he's built a little more like his mom. He never knew his father, though, since Stahn disappeared on an adventure when he was very young, and Rutee avoids talking about him. Nevertheless, Kyle dreams of becoming an adventurer like his father, always searching for new experiences. He hates being bored, but his active nature sometimes gets him in trouble with his mother and elder brother.
Reala
The ever-reliable Mysterious Young Magical Girl Of Mystery, 16 years old. Her sudden appearance and strange powers lead Kyle into the beginning of his adventure.
Loni Dunamis
They have the same last name, but Loni and Kyle apparently aren't blood relations -- Loni was adopted out of the same orphanage in Cresta where Rutee grew up. He's since made good, joining the knight corps of Atamoni, an organization which roams the countryside protecting the people from the threat of monsters. He puts up a rather brash front, but at heart he's very responsible, and works hard to keep Kyle under control.
Judas
May as well tattoo 'Nemesis' on this guy's forehead. Unless he happens to be Stahn in disguise or something like that. Does anyone remember if Stahn had purple eyes? In any event, until his unmasking, he remains the typical mysterious swordsman, who pops up when Kyle happens to be in particularly deep trouble.
Nanaly Fletch
She's the leader of a resistance group opposed to the dominant religion of Atamoni (a name that should be familiar to players of the first game), favoring a sort of optimistic agnostic philosophy. A skilled soldier, her abilities as a rider and archer are unquestioned.
Harold
We're not exactly sure what gender this character is. Namco states that Harold is female, but we remain unconvinced. Either way, he/she is a Mad Scientist, with a genius-level intellect and no common sense. Harold quickly joins Kyle's adventure thanks to his/her boundless curiosity.
Rutee Katrea
After saving the world, as mentioned before, Rutee settled down to run the orphanage in her hometown with Stahn, and they had a son, Kyle. Though she's grown a little older, she retains her somewhat prickly character from the days when she was a freelance Lens Hunter.
Philia Felice
Philia was another of the four heroes who saved the world in Tales of Destiny, and the author's personal favorite among Mutsumi Inomata's collection of character designs. After the adventure concluded, she had a bit of a crush on Stahn, but nevertheless recognized that he and Rutee were made for each other. She returned to the temple of Atamoni and continued research on the strange material Lens.
Woodrow Kervin
This may be a little confusing, because he had a different name in the American version of Tales of Destiny. There, the prince of Phandaria was named Garr Kelvin. Either way, though, in the 18 years since becoming a hero, he has ascended to the throne as king of Phandaria, and is respected throughout the land as an intelligent and prudent leader, as well as the savior of the known world and all that.
Elrane
Elrane is the high priestess of Atamoni, hence the most noteworthy religious authority in the world. As befits a representative of a benevolent goddess, she is helpful and friendly to all, using her ability to harness the power of Lens to produce beneficent miracles.
Barbatos Goetia
Far back in history, he was a legendary berserker, and the wielder of the Swordian Dymlos, who would eventually wind up in the hands of Stahn Aileron. Despite his feats, however, his name was lost to history, and no one remembers him..which has him in a somewhat unpleasant mood subsequent to his resurrection. It looks as if we have the villain of the piece here, although you never can be entirely sure.
